Shooting on Blackstone Way near Hwy 291

On 03- 17- 23 at 17: 09 the Sheriff ’s Office responded to a report of an assault in progress on Blackstone Way near Hwy 291. The caller reported seeing someone getting beat up outside a car on the side of the street. When they stopped to intervene, the suspect got in the car and sped off. A vehicle and suspect description were provided.

Law enforcement and medical personnel immediately responded to the area. The male victim was unable to communicate and died at the scene. The victim had no identification and was not able to be identified at the time.

On Monday morning, 03- 20- 23, an autopsy was performed at the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office. The victim was identified through fingerprints as 46 year old Derek J. Johnson of Spokane. Johnson had died of multiple small caliber bullet wounds.

On Wednesday 03- 22- 23

Stevens County detectives were able to identify the suspect vehicle. Detectives learned the registered owner, 53 year old Peter A. Allen of Spokane, had been arrested the previous evening at Northern Quest Casino for outstanding warrants and was in the Spokane County Jail.

Detectives were able to locate Allen’s vehicle and discovered evidence related to the homicide inside the vehicle. Detectives interviewed Allen later that evening and he confessed to shooting Johnson during an altercation.

Allen will be transferred at a later time to the Stevens

County jail where he will be charged with murder. It is unknown at this time when Allen’s first court appearance will be.
